International Tax and Legal Conference organized by PwC Moldova - "TOMORROW IN MOLDOVA STARTS TODAY!"

On 13 November 2007, PricewaterhouseCoopers Moldova , in collaboration with the Moldovan governmental authorities, organised its first International Conference, “Tomorrow in Moldova starts today!”

The event had official guests such as: the First Vice-Prime Minister - Mrs. Zinaida Greceanii, the Minister of Economy and Trade - Mr. Igor Dodon, the Vice Minister of Economy and Trade - Mr. Viorel Melnic and the Head of the State Tax Office - Mr. Sergiu Puscuta. They had described the current investment framework of the country, as well as the future intentions of the policymaker.

Mihaela Mitroi, Partner, Tax Advisory Services PricewaterhouseCoopers, opened the conference, welcoming the participants and introducing the speakers. The speakers were: Andrian Candu, Svetlana Ceban, Marin Moraru and Alla Cotos, but also our special guests from PwC Estonia and PwC Cyprus , Erki Uustalu (Manager, Tax Services) and Savvas Michail (Partner, Tax Services).

The conference gathered over 160 participants, top executives of companies from various industries, playing leading roles on the Moldovan market (e.g. Metro, Coca-Cola, Orange, Moldcell, Lukoil, Efes Vitanta, Petrom Moldova, Avon, Suedzuker Moldova, Philip Morris, Eximbank – Gruppo Veneto Banca, Mobiasbanca – Groupe Societe Generale, etc), as well as potential foreign investors (e.g. Praktiker, Delorian Group, Leptos Group, etc).

During this event, participants had the opportunity to analyse the specifics of corporate taxation in Moldova and the opportunities brought by the recently passed reforms, the similar experience of Estonia upon the introduction of the nil corporate income tax rate, important matters related to the indirect, individual and expatriate taxation, legal aspects of privatisation, company law and other issues related to the real estate sector in Moldova, the tax advantages of structuring the business in Moldova via Cyprus and The Netherlands.

According to Zinaida Greceanii, the main goal of the conference organized by PwC was for the state authorities to make an exchange of experience with the business community, to inform participants on the achievements and investment opportunities currently existing in Moldova .

“Moldova can become a bridge between CIS and EU”, remarked Mihaela Mitroi, in the context of the country's geographical position, relatively competitive labour force in terms of qualification and costs, trade preferences of Moldova with CIS and EU, as well as the continuously improving legislation and dialogue between the business representatives and state authorities.
