The concept of ‘Maurice Ile Durable’ attests of the Government’s will to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel, to improve consumption behaviours and to create a sustainable local industry of renewable energy sources. Key measures include:

  • Two news hydro units  at Midlands & La Nicolière                      
  • Land Based Oceanic Industries project                                        
  • Landfill Gas project at Mare Chicose                                             
  • Optimise the use of bagasse                                                          

Better manage demand                                          

  • “Observatoire de l’énergie” & information campaign
  • Solar water heater loan scheme
  • Reduction of duty on solar water heater & spare parts)
  • Introduction of Summer time (pilot project in 2008)
  • Set up an independent Utility  Regulatory Authority
  • Set up of a recycling program
  • 50% reduction of taxes on hybrid vehicles
