Surveys: How to participate

Meaningful survey results are dependent upon survey participants providing comparable information on a timely basis.

We ask that all participants download, print and review the detailed instructions for each survey in which they are participating prior to completing their data submission.

The 2008 BRASS plus mid-year "Lite" release instructions document includes important information about the columns of data requested for each timekeeper classification submitted to the survey.

In order to ensure the consistency and comparability of international office data submitted to the 2008 BRASSplus we ask that law firm participants follow the international office guidelines outlined within the instructions.

The 2007 LFSS instructions document includes information about the functionality of the data form, and provides detailed information on providing values for each form of data collected.

This year participants in both the 2008 BRASS plus mid-year "Lite" release and the 2007 LFSS have the following two options for collecting their data:

  • Preferred method: Data extraction tool

Developed by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Redwood Analytics, the data extraction collection tools are available free to participants in both surveys that have either Elite or CMS/Aderant time and billing systems. The data extraction tools are stand-alone, desktop applications that can be installed and run on any PC at your firm.

Please download and review the following installation guide(s) for step-by-step instructions on installing these applications.

All BRASS plus and LFSS participants who intend to use the data extraction tools must visit the download site to install or upgrade the version on the designated PC.

Note: If you already have the data extraction tool installed on your PC from a prior survey release, an upgrade is required before you can access the application. You will be prompted to upgrade your version during the installation program.

Both the BRASS plus mid-year "Lite" release and the LFSS data extraction applications are available for download at the following link:

The user ID and password required for download access is as follows:

    User ID:surveys
    Password:pwc2008

A key advantage of using these data extraction tools is the ability to preserve all of the firm's mappings to the survey-defined classifications across survey releases. Using these applications will not only reduce the time to participate in subsequent releases, but will ensure consistency and enhanced comparability in the results.

The LFSS data extraction application supports only firms who provide a 'total firm' or aggregate data submission. The spreadsheet-based data form (below) should be used if you choose to submit individual office data. We fully anticipate future releases of the data extraction application to accommodate this submission option.

IMPORTANT: The completed data submissions will be sent directly to a PwC law firm survey staff member, and at no time will any member of Redwood Analytics have access to your individual firm's data.

  • Alternative method: Spreadsheet-based data forms

  • Law firms who are not on the Elite or CMS/Aderant time and billing systems, or who choose to submit their data using our spreadsheet-based data forms should download and complete the following data form for the survey(s) in which they are participating.

  • Billing rate & associate salary survey plus mid-year "Lite" release participants:

    • Law firm statistical survey participants:

If your firm is submitting data for more than 15 offices, please contact a survey staff member for an alternative data form.

Note: New participants in the LFSS wishing to submit prior year data, or past participants in the LFSS who wish to revise prior year data, should contact a member of the survey staff.

Participants using the data extraction applications will have the capability within the tools to upload and send their completed submission(s) directly to a PricewaterhouseCoopers survey staff member.

All other participants should attach both the completed data form(s), and their report order(s) (now contained within the comparison group listing document) in an email and send to a survey staff member at: pwc.law.firm.survey@us.pwc.com.

Upon receipt of your completed data form(s) and report order, a survey staff member will contact you to discuss any data questions, and finalize your report selections.

Once your report order is confirmed, an invoice will be mailed to the contact at your firm.

Thank you for your support and participation in the PwC law firm surveys!
