The Asia Pacific region contains some of the largest and most rapidly expanding markets in the world. It is also a region where governments recognise indirect taxes such as VAT or GST as an increasingly important source of tax revenue. India introduces a Central VAT system in 2005, while Malaysia and Hong Kong are currently either considering the timing or the option of introducing a GST system.
Unlike the EU, indirect taxes such as VAT or GST in the Asia Pacific region are relatively less mature. No common framework for such taxes currently exists and each country adopts different ruses. In addition, the regulatory authorities often have a fairly harsh and unforgiving approach to lapses in tax compliance.
