Competing to win: How to avoid being eaten by a lion

On asking about the challenges businesses in the region face, East Africa’s business leaders expressed the concern that “competition” is a concern. Whilst we all know that competition is a sign of a healthy and robust economy, key players ask, is it a level playing field?

Two businessmen alight from their vehicle in the Mara. Walking down the road, they come face to face with a hungry lion. The first businessman turns to his friend to suggest that they run back to the car. The second businessman starts to remove his shoes. “Are you mad?” asks the first businessman, “we have to beat the lion back to the car”. The second man produces a pair of running shoes from his pocket, and replies “On the contrary, I don’t have to beat the lion back to the car; I only have to beat you”.
