Local Transportation
The public transportation infrastructure is limited in some areas. Taxis, although available, are relatively expensive and therefore staff should be able to drive and plan to purchase a vehicle soon after arrival.
Used cars can be purchased from various places around the island, including car rental offices and dealerships. In addition, the natural turnover of expatriates leaving the island each year creates an additional venue for purchasing used cars.
Cayman licenses can be obtained without examination upon presentation of a valid drivers license from selected countries. If you do not obtain a Caymanian license within 3 months of arrival, or your current licence is not recognised, you will be required to take a written and driving examination.
Insurance can be obtained from a number of local insurance companies.
Since there are only a limited number of roads into and out of Georgetown, an unexpected feature of life in the Cayman Islands is traffic jams in certain areas in the morning and evening peak periods.
International Transport
There are regularly scheduled flights from various US destinations, the UK (via Nassau) and Jamaica with less frequent services from other major regional destinations.
There are numerous flights daily from Miami. Other North American departure points include Houston, Tampa, Atlanta, New York and Toronto.
Flying time to Owen Roberts Airport, Grand Cayman, by jet from Miami is only 70 minutes and from Kingston, Jamaica approximately 50 minutes.
There are less regular services and occasional charter flights to locations such as Honduras, Cuba, Costa Rica, Panama and Peru.
