November 23, 2009 — At a ceremony held in Toronto last week, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) named Adam Nihmey as the 2009 National Volunteer of the Year and presented a $10,000 donation to his charity, The Prosperity™ Long-Term Care Fund. Adam, a director with Advisory Services in PwC’s Ottawa office, was honoured for his outstanding volunteer efforts as founder and president of the Prosperity Fund, which provides an additional source of funding to improve quality of care of seniors in Ottawa’s non-profit long-term care homes and in the community.
Since founding the Prosperity Fund in 2008, Adam has volunteered more than 1,500 hours on a number of volunteer activities with this charity, including raising money for the Prosperity Fund, creating an appreciation award to recognize local volunteer caregivers of the elderly and organizing volunteer activities for students in long-term care homes. As a result of the Prosperity Fund’s fundraising efforts, Adam has helped to raise over $200,000 through corporate and individual donations. “Through the National Volunteer of the Year Award, we are pleased to honour Adam’s extraordinary volunteerism and support the Prosperity Fund,” says Chris Clark, CEO and senior partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Canada. “In this challenging economy, we believe it is even more important than ever to support Canadian charities as they cope with increased demand and decreased funding. Adam has set an incredible example of volunteer leadership and excellence through his work with this charity, making him a true role model both within PwC and his community.”
Penny Collenette, adjunct professor at the Faculty of Law and executive in residence at the Telfer School of Management, adds: “Adam has continually demonstrated a strong commitment and perseverance towards this cause. His passionate leadership, teamwork and professionalism have impressed all of those involved with the Prosperity Fund as well as the community he serves. Through hard work and determination, he has brought his vision for the Prosperity Fund to life and is making a real impact to help meet the demand for long-term care in Ottawa.”
The National Volunteer of the Year Award is one of several initiatives of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada Foundation. This Award represents the culmination of PwC’s Volunteer Recognition Program, which celebrates the volunteer efforts of hundreds of PwC staff across the country.
Nationally, PwC received over 100 staff nominations for the Volunteer Recognition Award. Each PwC office first selected 18 regional Volunteers of the Year and the National Volunteer of the Year was selected from this group.
Adam was named National Volunteer of the Year by a selection committee comprised of PwC staff and representatives of the charitable sector in Canada. The selection committee considered the following criteria when determining the recipient: quality of contribution; demonstration of PwC values of teamwork, leadership and excellence; and benefits to the organization and community.
Also at the event, the 2009 regional Volunteers of the Year recipients were recognized for their extraordinary contributions to the community. Below are the regional recipients from PwC and the non-profit organizations for which they volunteer:
